A Promising Yet Underdeveloped Frontier

India’s Biomanufacturing Landscape

Biological engineering offers a promising avenue to address the industry’s challenges and unlock new opportunities. By harnessing the power of synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, long DNA synthesis, genome editing and strain design technologies, many of the current limitations can be overcome. The accelerated engineering of microbial strains and AI driven design of optimal growth conditions, can greatly benefit the synthetic biology driven biomanufacturing sector.
To realize the full potential of biological engineering centric approach to biomanufacturing, a multi-pronged approach is required. This includes investment in research and development, development of capacity and competence, establishing public-private partnerships and so on.
The CVJ Centre of Synthetic Biology and Biomanufacturing aims to addresses this urgent requirement and bring experts from academia, industry and regulatory bodies under one umbrella for sustainable and affordable delivery of bio products of social value.

Director’s Message

We are living through a moment that comes once in a generation — when the boundaries between biology, computation, and engineering dissolve, and an entirely new kind of science becomes possible. A science that does not merely study life but designs it. The CVJ Centre for Synthetic Biology and Biomanufacturing was born from the conviction that this moment demands more than research — it demands a new kind of institution.

We are organised around three interlocking verticals that create a seamless pipeline from knowledge to consequence:

Training the next generation of biological architects, conducting translational research at the deepest frontiers of the living world, and driving enterprise development that carries science from discovery into society.
We work where living architectures are redesigned from first principles — where the hidden layers of the genome are beginning to speak, where artificial intelligence and biological complexity are learning each other’s language, where fermentation, cellular engineering, and nanoscale biology converge into scalable, purposeful manufacturing. This is not incremental science. It is a fundamental renegotiation of what biology can do — and what it can become.

The global biomanufacturing economy is not a distant prospect. It is arriving now, and arriving fast. Bio-based therapeutics, sustainable materials, precision fermentation, carbon-intelligent production systems — the industries of the next two decades will be built by people who understood biology deeply enough to engineer it with intention. We are positioned at that intersection — not as observers, but as architects.

If you are a student who has felt that science should be more than publications — this is your place.

If you are a scientist trying to find answers to the most important questions across disciplines — this is your laboratory.
If you are an innovator who believes that the deepest science and the most consequential enterprise are not opposites but partners — this is your ecosystem.
We do not recruit people to fill positions. We invite minds to co-author a future.
Come build the future with us. With boundless enthusiasm and unwavering purpose,
